January's Tunes

Perhaps inspired by the travels ahead of me, I have been digging some “global” tunes this month. Some nostalgic and some quality sing alongs. A pleasant mixture of funk, jazz and my all time favorite, a female singer with a guitar.

Cret Baker

When I’m feeling like a little jazz, Miles Davis is my man. Kind of blue played often in our house growing up and I have never ventured far from it. To remedy this, I have been making an effort to switch things up and so far I am really enjoying this album. Turn it on and absorb. as titled, it might even help you to practice an attitude or feeling of “no problem”.

Khruangbin

shown to me by my one and only music guru and gal pal (Hailey Phelps) Khruangbin is a texas based band rocking some seriously groovy tunes. While I wouldn’t have been able to put my finger on it, they take inspiration from some thai funk movement that happened in the 60s. This inspo really comes through in their tracks Dern Kala and two fish and an elephant. If you are in need of a pick me up, have a little listen to Evan Finds the third room and ABSOLUTELY watch the music video.

tragically I missed their tour through Europe, so for now this pitchfork live sesh is my jam.

Courtney Marie Andrews

Also introduced to me by my friend Hailey Phelps, knowing just how much I love a lady singing while playing the guitar, courtney marie andrews is just lovely. We saw her in concert this fall in Ann Arbor and fell hard. Her voice is insane and her sound is a very ENJOYABLE sing along-able americana, folk, singer song writer situation. She’s cool.

Teeth & Tongue cover the smiths - must listen

I cannot sit still while listening to this cover. at the very least one foot must bop along. Also love the baby’s breath and white carnations sprusin’ up their microphones.

Jade Bird

A singer song writer with a beautiful voice is always something I enjoy listening to. Jade bird’s first album is great for a sing along or for company. She has a nice balance of balads with more catchy, poppy sounds. the songs furious and what am I here for are a good place to start. And of course listen to her live stuff.

Natalia Lafourcade

one recent afternoon I was really missing speaking spanish, as I had done during four months of traveling through south america last year. so I figured I would satisfy this longing with some music. My REPERTOIRE of latina music begins and ends with the buena vista social club. And though they are one of my all time favorites, perfect dinner-making music, i needed to branch out. My search lead me to this gem. Natalia and her band are so fun and so catchy.
