My first solo long distance hike was hard. I learned a lot walking 100 miles in five days & celebrated the journey with a lot of coffee in Edinburgh…

At the end of 2018 I flew to Germany to join my parents for the holidays. My plan was to travel around Europe for the next year, visiting countries off the beaten path & completing a few long distance hikes.

But my plans are always subject to change & when i was offered a job on a remote island in the Norwegian arctic circle I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to live in such an epic place.

south america 2017-18

in college i longed to travel for an extended amount of time. I worked several jobs saving as much as i could to take myself on an expedition through south america. besides antarctica it was the only continent i had never been to (I grew up living and traveling in many different countries) & i expected it to be unlike anywhere i had traveled or lived before.

with no plan, no idea of where i would go or for how long i would travel i boarded a flight to botoga, colombia. For the next five months I traveled south exploring cities, climbing mountains, enjoying beautiful fuit & meeting life long friends.

EQUADOR

i SPENT ALMOST A MONTH IN EQUADOR HIKING & TRAINING FOR MY FIRST MOUNTAIN CLIMB. From glaciers to lush jungle it is an ecologically diverse place

BOLIVIA

my two weeks in bolivia began at the great lake Titicaca. Then I headed to the highest capital city in the world, La Paz & the Uyuni Salt falts

from torres del paine to the majestic fitzroy, patagonia is a vast collection of epic landscapes. Perfect for climbing, hiking, camping or enjoying a beer with a view. these lands live up to the hype & can restore hope that the health of our planet is not completely lost.

for the planet

in the last three years I have been actively trying to minimize personal waste. Like many otherS I switched out my toothbrush for a bamboo one, got really into composting & picking up trash on beaches became a beloved hobby. TRAVELING & CAMPING ARE BOTH CHALLENGING WHEN ASPIRING TO PRODUCE MINIMAL WASTE, FOR OBVIOUSLY FLYING ACROSS OCEANS IS A HUGE CARBON EXPENSE. bUT ALSO IN THE EVERYDAY, REUSABLES CAN BECOME HARDER TO CARRY & PLASTIC PACKAGING IS SO MUCH LIGHTER WHEN HIKING.

aT THE SAME TIME, IT WAS FASCINATING TO SEE RECYCLING SYSTEMS IN GERMANY & DEVASTATING TO FIND MARINE LITTER ON REMOTE ARCTIC BEACHES, LIKELY CARRIED ALONG GULF STREAM CURRENTS. nOW THAT i AM SETTLING DOWN SOMEWHERE FOR THE NEXT FEW YEARS, i AM LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING BACK INTO MY PLANET FRIENDLY RHYTHMS.
