Log Six: Good Bye El Chalten
One last stroll around town
On my last day in El Chaltén I did nothing in particular. I walked around town one last time, visited my favorite fruit shop one last time where I bought three peaches and ate all three on the shop’s stoop one last time.
I strolled aimlessly around town, admiring houses and flowers, until I ended up at these cliffs. For a good while I stood watching tiny people make their way to the top. People come from all over the world to spend seasons here, some projecting these cliffs, others with eyes on the Fitzroy and neighboring granite towers. In the cold of winter, in the rains of summer, in the year long relentless winds and storms of Patagonia, people flock.
One last view of the mountains
To the left is Cerro Torre & to the right, the fitzroy
I walked out of town to the view point Olivia and I had visited days before, when low clouds had obscured all the mountains. Today blue skies offered a view of the Chaltén Massif including Fitzroy and Cerro Torre with her accompanying glacier. It feels like a gift when mountains typically shroud in cloud come out, as if it were just for you.
I feel very lucky to have spent time in this legendary place. I hope to one day return and spend more time out in the mountains.
